The Avengers Screencaps 2-The Decapod(1962)

In the very early episodes of The Avengers John Steed had three different companion's Dr David Keel, Cathy Gale and in this episode the wonderfully named Venus Smith (played by Julie Stevens-who you may recognise from Playschool in the 1970's if your reading this in the UK )who as well as been a secret agent was a nightclub singer. She was featured in six episodes untill they switched to the more familiar team of Steed and Gale on a more regular basis. She had a quite different approach to Cathy and Emma Peel , as opposed to been adept at martial arts she was more bolshy with the verbels as Steed finds out in this episode.

  1. I didn't see any of the episodes with Venus Smith but she doesn't have the vixen look of Cathy Gale or the mix of girl-next-door that can kick ass-ness of Emma Peel.

  2. First time I saw her too in this episode , yes she was more like a character out of Coronation Street than the Avengers , plus Steed kept on putting her in dangerous situations, which wasn't very fair on her (you knew Gale and Peel had some fighting skills ,, but with Venus you felt that she was at risk)Really they were trying new partners out after the main character from first season David Keel left , leaving a gap to fill , in fact many of the original stories were intended for a male character that Cathy starred in but it worked really well .I do like Venus's coat though , very early sixties style like seen in the film Georgie Girl..they seemed very popular back then
